KelownaNow

I was thrilled when I received an email from KelownaNow asking for an interview about my Instagram account @lichonphotography for their Sunday Social Connection. The Sunday Social Connection interviews social media accounts from Kelowna British Columbia, Canada. The profiles are chosen based on their content, style, and interactions with the community. The interview questions gave me time to reflect on my interactions with Instagram.

Thinking about creating a blog post about this interview was tendious.Should I screenshot the interview? Re-post the interview word for word? Or should I talk about my insights from the interview?I chose the later because I want to direct traffic to my interview on KelownaNow!  The interview got me thinking about why @lichonphotography account is more successful then my other instagram account @kelownaweddingphotographer.

Why have Different Instagram Accounts?

I have two photography accounts on Instagram. I chose to create two different Instagram accounts because my target audiences are different. My @lichonphotography account is for fine-art enthusiast . Whereas, @kelownaweddingphotographer is targeted towards potential lifestyle clients. Similarly, my website is marketed towards potential wedding clients. This explains why you don't see my fine-art photographs on my website.

Consistency on Instagram is very important. When you scroll through someones feed you should instantly understand the content they're creating. Usually an underlying theme is easily identified by the viewer.  My feed would look sloppy if I mixed my fine-art and lifestyle photography together.  Looking through @lichonphotography you can easily identify a fantasy orientated feed. Whereas, @kelownaweddingphotographer overarching feed theme is lifestyle photography.

Funny enough, I don't think the @kelownaweddingphotographer account is consistent; which reflects my lack of motivation to update my feed. Even my Instagram name does not reflect the content on my feed. I chose @kelownaweddingphotographer in hopes to boost my SEO online (my name appears on googles search engine). Perhaps, I should call my lifestyle account @lichonlifestyle rather than @kelownaweddingphotographer. I have to give this some more thought.

Why do I neglect my Wedding Photography Instagram Account?

The interview with KelownaNow was about my fine art account because I am constantly engaging with the fine-art photography community on Instagram.  I am always giving people genuine likes and comments on other accounts. The last year on average I post once a week on @lichonphotography.  I upload videos everyday on my stories. On average 100-250 people view my stories daily.  Giving my fans the behind the scenes look into my everyday life. My posts on average do fairly well with less effort, making my usage more rewarding.

Whereas, @kelownaweddingphotographer is not nearly as rewarding. I don't have as many followers following my posts on the account. I don't engage with the wedding community on Instagram daily, I don't upload any stories, I don't put any work on the account, and I've never had anyone inquire for my wedding services through Instagram. All my inquires for weddings come through my website. Perhaps with more effort, I can make the wedding account more engaging and hopefully get another interview but with the focus on my wedding photography!

Amanda and Eric's Engagement party

My beautiful sister Amanda got engaged to Eric this summer! My mother was extremely happy about their engagement, so when these two islanders came to visit she threw them a party in her backyard in Kelowna to celebrate with immediate family and close friends. It was a lovely and quaint event with lots of cider, warm beer, cute cupcakes, and good food! If that was any indication of what their wedding will be like, it's safe to say their wedding is going to be a blast and so friggen adorable!

Kelowna 2016 Dîner en Blanc

My mama invited me to go to an event called Dîner en Blanc. I quickly made the decision to go as I've heard great reviews about this event. I was excited to be part of this spectacle and it certainly lived up to my expectations!

Diner en Blanc involves a large group of people gathering together, wearing all white and dinning together in an undisclosed public space. Everyone who attends MUST where all white and bring their own dinning materials. The location not disclosed until last minute, so you can only imagine the suspense and excitement that was in the air! All attendees meet at  the assigned location, load onto the buses, which take everyone to the secret location.

This years Dîner en Blanc was located at the Dolphins water front near the Grand Hotel. I essentially played paparazzi for my mom and I had so much fun doing so!  I followed my mother and her friends around the event. I was extremely happy (and relieved) that I decided to bring my camera with me! What a wonderful event!

Jazzy and Steven's Engagement Shoot

My first engagement session

I'll never forget my first engagement session. I was so nervous. My first engagement session clients were Jazzy and Steven. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to photograph their engagement and wedding in 2014. They found my photography through the University of British Columbia Facebook page.  I was extremely excited to photograph my first wedding with them!

These engagement photographs were taken near sunset at Bertram park in south Kelowna. Bertram is a fantastic location for a photoshoot. Many different background options to choose from! Aren't they just such a beautiful and stunning couple?! I wish them a life time of happiness, health and love!

Colourful Portraits with my Mother

A few days ago I photographed a children's birthday party in Kelowna. At the event there were these beautiful massive balloons. I asked the parents (my clients)  if I could take some balloons home, and they said I could!  The event ended late, I stuffed the balloons into my car. You can only imagine how silly I looked driving with a car stuffed with pink baloons! Anyways, as it was late, I decided to spend the night at my mothers house nearby.

My mother was also mesmerized by these balloons! I wanted to use the balloons as soon as possible. I decided it would be a great idea to take photographs of my mother with the balloons in the morning.

In the morning my mother put on her favourite dress and we went to her pergola in her backyard.  The photos turned out great - I absolutely love them. When my mother looked at the pictures she was amazed at herself. I'am glad my pictures can reflect her inner and outer beauty. I had a lot of fun with these portraits !

People I've met at UBCO

People I've met at UBC Okanagan

Every year the Okanagan campus is beautifully decorated with blooming flowers at the end of the winter semester. I obsess over these flowers. The last five years I was too busy with school to give these flowers extra attention. My last year at the university I decided the time was now.

I did not have the energy to take fine art images on campus. A lovely idea popped into my head. Take photographs of people you know on campus. Over the years I've met many lovely people from UBC. Enough to start this small personal photography project.
